Pea prices fall due to subdued buying
Kanpur. The pea market witnessed a downward trend during the current week. Prices continued to decline due to increased selling pressure at higher prices and weak buying. Limited buying by pulse millers failed to support rising prices, and the market remained under pressure. This year, pea sowing is progressing at a faster pace than last year. As of November 7, pea sowing was recorded across 3.38 lakh hectares across the country, an increase of 0.87 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year. This increase in sowing indicates a potential higher production in the coming months.
Canada's pea trade is under pressure due to India's imposition of a 30% import duty on yellow peas from November 1, 2025. Production is high, but global demand is weak, and the Chinese market is virtually closed. Strong competition from Russia and Ukraine and the availability of cheap peas in the Black Sea region have increased Canada's challenges. Despite low stocks, China is showing no signs of reducing the 100% duty on Canadian peas and is increasing imports of Russian peas. Yellow peas are selling at $7 per bushel in Western Canada, green peas at $10–10.25, and Maple peas at $9–10.50 per bushel. Pea planting in India is accelerating, with a larger area being covered than last year. Previously imported peas are also available in sufficient quantities.
Due to increased selling by importers and subdued buying, imported peas prices declined by Rs. 50 per quintal this week, with prices at the weekend settling at Rs. 3600/3625 in Mumbai, Rs. 3625 in Russia, Rs. 3525 in Russia, Rs. 3475 in Canada, and Rs. 3425/50 in Russia. Due to sluggish demand, Kanpur pea prices declined by Rs. 75 per quintal during the current week, reaching Rs. 3825/3850 per quintal at the weekend. Similarly, the prices of Lalitpur peas also declined by Rs 100/150 per quintal this week and the price remained at Rs 3300/3550 per quintal at the weekend. Due to weak buying, the prices of Mahoba peas declined by Rs 100 per quintal this week and remained at Rs 3300/3700 per quintal at the weekend. Similarly, the prices of Orai peas also declined by Rs 100 per quintal this week and remained at Rs 3300/3500 per quintal at the weekend. The prices of Jhansi peas declined by Rs 100 per quintal this week and remained at Rs 3400/3600 per quintal at the weekend. Due to the all-round decline and sluggish buying, the prices of peas in Madhya Pradesh declined by Rs 25/50 per quintal this week and the prices remained at Rs 3400/3500 in Bina and Rs 3325/3425 per quintal in Damoh at the weekend.
Pea Dal
