Turmeric Prices Fall - Prices to Rise Again
New Delhi. Turmeric prices traded mixed during the current week. After opening higher at the beginning of the week, prices were quoted lower at the end of the week. However, sources say that due to a shortage of stocks, prices are likely to rise again in the coming days. Turmeric futures also closed lower during the current week. December turmeric futures opened at Rs. 15,200 and closed at Rs. 14,298. Meanwhile, April turmeric futures opened at Rs. 13,600 and closed at Rs. 12,904.
Turmeric prices in the Delhi market opened at Rs. 14,900/15,100 at the beginning of the week, and were sold at Rs. 14,900/15,200 in the middle of the week. However, prices were quoted at Rs. 14,600/14,800 at the end of the week. Turmeric prices were also quoted at a decline of ₹200-400 per quintal at the end of the week in the markets of the producing centers. Informed sources say that turmeric prices will rise again in the coming days, as while stocks at producing centers are low, the arrival of the new crop will arrive by the end of January. Although turmeric has been sown on a 25-30 percent larger area this year compared to last year, unseasonal rains have also damaged the crop. Consequently, production is expected to be lower than the previous year's sowing. However, yields will certainly be higher than last year, as per-hectare productivity will increase in areas where water has not accumulated.
Production Estimates
Experts say that due to the increase in sowing area at producing centers, turmeric production is expected to increase for the second year in a row. Last year, trade estimates for turmeric production in the country were 70-75 lakh bags. While the lowest production of turmeric was 50-52 lakh bags in 2024, the highest production was estimated at 94-95 lakh bags (each bag weighing 60 kg) in 2020.
Arrivals
Due to low stocks, the arrival of turmeric in the markets has remained low. In Hingoli, the main market in Marathwada, arrivals are running at 5-6 thousand bags, while in Basmat, arrivals are 4000-5000 bags. In Nizamabad, arrivals are 1000-1500 bags, and in Warangal and Duggirala, arrivals are 400-500 bags. In Erode, arrivals are 2000-2500 bags.
Not much slowdown
Traders believe that there is no possibility of a major decline in turmeric prices. The market will continue to fluctuate between ₹5 and ₹8 per kg until the new crop arrives. Prices will gradually rise in the coming days. It is noteworthy that in September, the price of single polished turmeric bundle in the Delhi market was ₹12,600/₹12,800 per quintal, which increased to ₹140/₹142 in October. After recently reaching ₹14,800/₹15,000, prices are now being quoted at ₹14,600/₹14,800 at the end of the week. Sources believe that the price of turmeric in the Delhi market should reach ₹15,500/₹15,800 before the arrival of the new crop.
Export
During the first five months of the current financial year, April-August, turmeric exports were 3 percent higher than last year, but export earnings declined by 4 percent due to lower export prices. According to data released by the Spices Board, during April-August 2025, turmeric exports amounted to 80,157 tonnes, generating export revenue of ₹1,228.39 crore. In April-August 2024, turmeric exports amounted to 77,585 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹1,279.60 crore. During 2024-25 (April-March), total turmeric exports amounted to 1,76,325 tonnes.
