Urad prices continue to decline due to increased selling pressure

Chennai. Urad prices continued their downward trend this week. Increased selling pressure and weak demand kept the market under pressure. The arrival of new urad in Chandausi and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh has increased availability. Increased stocks at ports and producer markets, along with sluggish demand, continue to pressure urad prices. Amid strong demand for urad in India, a significant shift in import sources is being observed. Brazil has rapidly emerged as a major supplier, alongside Myanmar. A total of 1.07 lakh tonnes of urad was imported in October, with 68,043 tonnes coming from Myanmar and 39,121 tonnes from Brazil. Brazil's share of the 1.26 lakh tonnes imported in September increased to 44,882 tonnes. Brazil's share in two months almost halved Myanmar's—the largest increase ever. Of the total 2.86 lakh tonnes of imports in April-August 2025, Myanmar contributed 2.37 lakh tonnes, while Brazil contributed 45,000 tonnes. Of the annual 8.2 lakh tonnes of imports (April-March 2024-25), Brazil contributed 0.84 lakh tonnes and Myanmar 7.15 lakh tonnes. Brazil's urad production is expected to increase from 60,000 tonnes to over 1 lakh tonnes this year. The crop there is fetching higher prices in the Indian market due to its better quality, larger grains, and cleaner grades. Although Brazil's production is still lower than Myanmar's, if Indian purchases remain strong, urad cultivation there could double next year. With more arable land, Brazil could become a major supplier in the future. Due to increased selling pressure from importers and sluggish demand, Chennai urad prices declined by Rs. 50/75 per quintal this week, bringing the FAQ price to Rs. 6,725 and SQ urad to Rs. 7,300 per quintal. Similarly, Mumbai urad prices declined by Rs. 50 per quintal this week, reaching Rs. 6,775 per quintal at the weekend.
