Kolkata: A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. This system is expected to bring extremely heavy rainfall to West Bengal and Odisha between July 5 and 7. Rough sea conditions are also anticipated, and fishermen have been advised against venturing into the deep sea during this period. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall across all districts of Odisha and most parts of Bengal for these dates; rainfall is also expected in other adjoining regions.
According to the Meteorological Department, the depression was previously located 50 km away from Balasore (Odisha) and Digha (Bengal) but has since moved forward. Strong winds accompanied by heavy rain are likely in both states between July 5 and 7. A 'Red Alert' for torrential rain has been issued for the Odisha districts of Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, and Kandhamal, while 'Orange' and 'Yellow' alerts have been issued for 19 and 6 districts, respectively.
While the torrential rain associated with this cyclonic system may cause difficulties for the public, it will simultaneously benefit farmers, particularly those cultivating Kharif crops like paddy. It is worth noting that West Bengal is the leading producer of paddy and rice, while Odisha is also a significant producer.
One arm of the Southwest Monsoon is active over the western and northwestern parts of the country, resulting in heavy rainfall or overcast skies across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, and other nearby areas. Technically, the monsoon has now covered the entire country, and heavy rainfall is being recorded in many regions.
