Adequate Global Stocks of Lentils Available

Vancouver: Although there has been some reduction in lentil sowing in countries like Canada and the US this year—potentially leading to a slight dip in yields—substantial carryover stocks mean that processors and exporters in supplying nations will hold large inventories, potentially making it difficult to find buyers. Meanwhile, Australia is projected to see record lentil production, and crop conditions in Russia and Kazakhstan are also reported to be favorable.

The combined lentil cultivation area in Canada and the US has shrunk from 5.485 million acres last year to 4.671 million acres this season. While average yields are expected to remain relatively stable due to normal weather and rainfall conditions, total production could decline because of the reduced acreage.

If yields remain at average levels, lentil production could drop from 3.36 million tonnes to 2.16 million tonnes in Canada, and from 0.492 million tonnes to 0.302 million tonnes in the US. Based on three-year average yields, lentil production is estimated at 2.39 million tonnes for Canada and 0.348 million tonnes for the US.
