Signs of a Rise in Global Rice Prices

New Delhi: The current global scenario indicates that international rice prices may rise slightly in the coming months compared to current levels. The closure of the Hormuz Strait is partially affecting global rice trade, particularly exports from India and Thailand, while shipping charges have also increased significantly. African countries are importing rice, including Basmati, according to their needs.

For the 2026–27 season, preliminary estimates suggest that global rice production may decrease by around 5 million tons, while consumption is expected to increase by approximately 3.8 million tons. This will widen the gap between demand and supply.

The impact of the El Niño weather cycle is expected to affect rice production in countries such as India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Production may also decline in the United States and Brazil. African countries and rice exporters are also focusing on two to three Asian countries—Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh—which have historically imported large quantities of rice.

In India, adequate rice stocks are available, so a slight decrease in production will not have a significant impact.
