Despite Tensions in West Asia, Exports of Small Cardamom Perform Well

Kochi: The export performance of Indian small (green) cardamom is showing a positive trend in the global market. Despite ongoing tensions and disputes in West Asia, indications suggest that export shipments have nearly doubled.
According to industry analysts, the primary reason for this remarkable growth in Indian small cardamom exports is the very weak crop in Guatemala. It is worth noting that Guatemala, located in Central America, is the world’s largest producer and exporter of small cardamom and India’s main competitor in the international export market. Adverse weather conditions and natural calamities have severely damaged the crop, with production expected to drop by nearly 50 percent. Additionally, pest and disease attacks have affected the harvest.
Due to the decline in exports from Guatemala, the demand for Indian green cardamom in the global market has strengthened significantly. Exporters report that global buyers are continuously showing strong interest in procuring premium quality and bold-grade Indian small cardamom to ensure steady supply and availability in their regular markets.
Although the suspension of ship movements from the Hormuz Strait is a matter of concern, many buyers are willing to pay higher freight charges to procure cardamom via alternative but safe routes. Meanwhile, in auction centers, the price of small cardamom remains firm at ₹2,200–2,350 per kilogram.
