Pea prices rise due to subdued selling and growing demand

Kanpur. Pea prices in the domestic market continued their upward trend this week, driven by subdued selling from stockists and importers alongside improving demand. Pea availability at ports and producing markets has begun to tighten, raising concerns regarding market supply. Faced with limited availability, stockists and pulse millers have become active in the market; millers are increasing purchases to meet their requirements, while stockists are limiting sales in anticipation of better prices. This dynamic is straining supply and lending strength to prices. Meanwhile, reports of disruptions in pea loading from Russia are fueling concerns about future supplies. If loading disruptions from Russia persist and domestic demand remains strong, pea prices are likely to see further upward momentum. Due to reduced selling by importers and sustained buying interest, prices for imported peas rose by ₹100 per quintal this week; by the weekend, rates at Mundra port stood at ₹4,550 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹4,450 per quintal for Russian peas. At Hazira and Mundra ports, prices reached ₹4,700 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹4,500 per quintal for Russian peas.

Sustained buying interest also drove a rise in demand across domestic markets this week. Supported by strong demand, the price of Kanpur peas increased by ₹100 per quintal to reach ₹4,800 per quintal. Similarly, prices for Lalitpur peas rose by ₹100, reaching a range of ₹4,150–₹4,450 per quintal. Due to easing selling pressure and increased buying, prices in the Orai and Mahoba markets rose by ₹150–200 per quintal, reaching ₹4,000–4,400 per quintal in Orai and ₹4,400–5,000 per quintal in Mahoba. Similarly, the price of peas in Rath saw an increase of ₹50 per quintal, bringing the rates to ₹4,000–4,500 per quintal. Supported by a broad-based upward trend and improved demand, pea prices in Madhya Pradesh markets also rose by ₹100 per quintal, reaching ₹3,800–4,400 per quintal in Bina and ₹3,900–4,400 per quintal in Damoh.
Canada
Buyer interest in yellow peas has increased amidst preparations for the harvest in Canada's major producing provinces. The FOB farm-gate price for yellow peas for September shipment rose to $8 per bushel. Preliminary reports suggest that yellow pea production may fall short of earlier estimates. Strong yellow pea prices in India are providing support to the Canadian market, and export performance is expected to be robust.
Pea Split Pulse (Matar Dal)
Driven by increased buying, prices of pea split pulse rose by ₹200 per quintal during the current week; by the weekend, rates stood at ₹5,200–5,300 per quintal in Kanpur and ₹5,400–5,500 per quintal in Indore.
