Uncertainty Over India’s Green Lentil Demand; Imports Likely to Stay Limited

The demand outlook for green lentils in India remains uncertain, with mixed signals emerging from domestic supply and government procurement trends.

The government has approved procurement of around 2.2 million tonnes of pigeon pea (tur) under the MSP for the 2025-26 kharif marketing year. However, procurement has been slow so far, as market prices in several states are ruling above MSP, prompting farmers to sell in the open market instead.

According to official estimates, India’s pigeon pea production is expected at 3.46 million tonnes, about 4.4% lower than last year.

Firm prices and relatively tight availability of tur could encourage millers to substitute with lentils, potentially supporting demand for imported green lentils.

However, actual government procurement is likely to remain limited to around 370,000 tonnes. Combined with an existing stock of about 300,000 tonnes, total government holdings may reach approximately 660,000 tonnes, which is considered sufficient to manage prices.

On the global front, Canada’s green lentil production surged to 1.7 million tonnes in 2025, up sharply from 750,000 tonnes last year. The higher output has created downward pressure on global markets. However, production is expected to decline in 2026, which could help rebalance supply.

With adequate domestic availability of pigeon pea and sufficient government stocks, India’s import demand for green lentils is likely to remain limited, while abundant global supplies may continue to weigh on prices.
