Some Positive Signs for Lentil and Pea Cultivation in Canada

Ottawa. Sowing of peas and other pulse crops, including lentils, is scheduled to begin in Canada in April 2026, and recent weeks have shown some positive signs that could provide significant incentives for farmers to expand their cultivation or at least maintain it at last year's levels.
Canada currently has large stocks of lentils, peas, and chickpeas, with new shipments expected to arrive in August-September. Export performance in this period could prove crucial for pulse cultivation in Canada.
Canadian pulse producers and exporters faced significant difficulties in 2025, as China imposed a 100 percent tariff on pea imports in March 2025, and India imposed a 30 percent tariff in November 2025.
This weakened Canada's position in the Chinese pea market and increased Russia's dominance. However, China has now agreed to reduce import duties on Canadian peas. This decision may come into effect from next month. This is expected to provide significant assistance to Canada in increasing its pea exports to China.
As far as lentils are concerned, their production in Australia is expected to jump sharply to a new record level of 18-19 lakh tonnes, which has significantly increased its supply and availability in the global market.
Countries like Canada, Russia and Kazakhstan have also witnessed excellent lentil production. However, in recent times, there has been some increase in the demand and price of lentils. The focus of exporting countries is now focused on India's crop.
