New Delhi. In view of the excellent paddy production and strong arrivals, the Central Government has increased the rice procurement target for the current Kharif marketing season of 2025-26 by 1.4 million tons from 46.35 million tons to 47.75 million tons.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already procured approximately 46.5 million tons of rice (paddy equivalent) in the current marketing season, which is 1.5 million tons more than the previous target. Furthermore, rice procurement so far has reached 97 percent of the new target.

According to official sources, states like Telangana, Haryana, and Chhattisgarh have seen excellent procurement of paddy from farmers, and procurement is still ongoing in some areas, necessitating an increase in the total rice procurement target.

A Food Corporation official stated that the Central Government has implemented a new scheme to procure 10 percent of unbroken rice from Andhra Pradesh, whereas previously this scheme was limited to some other states.

The 1.4 million tonnes of 10% broken rice stock from Andhra Pradesh was not included in the initial target, but has now been included, increasing the total target by 1.4 million tonnes. It is worth noting that for the current marketing season 2025-26, the Central Government has launched a scheme to procure 5 million tonnes of high-quality rice with a broken grain content of no more than 10%.

This scheme is being implemented in five states. In previous years, the Food Corporation of India has been procuring rice stocks with up to 25% broken grains for the central pool.

During the first phase of this scheme, it was decided to procure 10% broken rice from five states. This includes 2 million tonnes from Punjab, 1.4 million tonnes from Andhra Pradesh, 8 lakh tonnes from Haryana, 5 lakh tonnes from Odisha, and 3 lakh tonnes from Chhattisgarh. Earlier, the total procurement target for rice in Andhra Pradesh was 16 lakh tonnes, which has now been increased to 30 lakh tonnes.
