Seasonal Decline in Pea Market

Regina. Pea prices in Western Canadian markets typically soften during June and July as buyer interest shifts toward the upcoming new crop. Sowing is nearing completion in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada's two leading pea-producing provinces, with weather conditions having become largely favorable. Harvesting of the new crop is set to begin in August and gain momentum in September.
Prices for yellow peas in Canadian markets have remained relatively stable, hovering between $8.00 and $8.25 per bushel.
Last week, prices briefly touched a high of $8.50 per bushel in some areas but failed to sustain that level. Green pea prices have slipped to $9.50 per bushel, while the FOB farm-gate price is trending toward $9.00 per bushel.
Export demand for peas has weakened. While sowing has proceeded normally, the crop's progress is satisfactory; this is likely to exert some downward pressure on prices. Canada will face competition from Russia in the Chinese and Indian markets.
