Procurement of Oilseeds and Pulses Yet to Begin; Over 900,000 Tonnes Sold Below MSP
★ With procurement yet to start, farmers have sold over 900,000 tonnes of five major crops below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) since September 24.
★ The delay in procurement is believed to be due to high moisture content in the harvested crops.
★ The Centre had approved procurement of tur (pigeon pea), urad (black gram), moong (green gram), groundnut, soybean, and sesame from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat at their respective MSPs, at an estimated cost of ₹13,890 crore. Later, Karnataka was also cleared for moong procurement.
★ Requests for approval to procure oilseeds and pulses from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are under process. Maharashtra and Rajasthan have also sought central approval for procurement. According to sources, groundnut procurement in Gujarat is likely to begin next week.
★ Sources further indicated that the Centre has not yet approved the Madhya Pradesh government’s request to implement the Bhavantar (price difference) scheme for soybean. Officials from the Agriculture Ministry could not be reached for comment.
