Indonesian Delegation to Visit India to Resolve Peanut Import Deadlock

Chennai. Indonesia has been unable to import Indian peanuts for the past few weeks after the government announced a suspension. To resolve this impasse, an Indonesian team is scheduled to visit India by the end of this month. Indonesia has traditionally been a significant buyer of Indian peanuts, so the halt in imports is causing difficulties for Indian producers and exporters.

It is noteworthy that the Indonesian government issued a notification on August 27th, announcing the suspension of peanut imports from India from December 3rd.

It is believed that the government decided to suspend imports after reports of the presence of aflatoxin in peanuts imported from India.

The Chairman of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), a body under the Union Ministry of Commerce, stated that when India contacted Indonesia to investigate the issue, Indonesia responded positively and is now sending a team to India.

According to trade analysts, Indonesia may resume imports of Indian peanuts if the Indonesian team is satisfied with the methods and procedures followed by producers and exporters in India.

The Indonesian team is likely to inspect facilities in India from where peanut exports are handled. Aflatoxin is considered a toxic compound that resembles a fungus and grows on many food products, including peanuts.

Consuming contaminated food products can pose a health risk to humans and animals. Manufacturers say the matter was not very complicated but unnecessary delays are being made in resolving it.
