Lentil Market in Canada Steady Amidst Anticipation of New Crop

Winnipeg. The lentil trade in Western Canada remains steady, making it difficult to predict the market's direction; only sporadic buying is taking place. Prices fluctuate, showing slight improvements followed by softening. The price for No. 1 quality Eston lentils stands at 17.18 cents per pound, whereas contract prices for the upcoming new crop have risen above 20 cents per pound.

Prices for both current stocks and the upcoming new crop of red lentils are hovering around the 22-cents-per-pound mark, occasionally edging slightly higher. While there has been some softening in recent weeks, the price for No. 2 quality large green lentils remains stable at 23 cents per pound, with the upcoming crop quoted at 23–24 cents per pound.

Canada has seen a roughly 14% decline in lentil acreage this year, likely resulting in slightly lower production. However, due to substantial carryover stocks, total availability could match or even exceed that of the 2025–26 season. Arrivals of the new lentil crop are set to begin in the next two to three weeks. Meanwhile, Australia is also expected to see excellent production, which could intensify competition.
