Mumbai. Due to high stocks of previously imported goods, rising global market prices, and the onset of domestic oilseed crop arrivals, edible oil imports in October 2025 declined to around 1.328 million tonnes.

This was significantly lower than the massive 1.659 million tonnes imported in September 2025 and 1.427 million tonnes imported in October 2024, but slightly higher than the 1.250-1.28 million tonnes estimated by industry and trade analysts.

Despite this, gross edible oil imports for the entire 2024-25 marketing season (November-October) increased to 16.011 million tonnes, compared to only 15.963 million tonnes in the 2023-24 season.

Data from the Solvent Extraction Association of India (SOI) shows that during the 2024-25 marketing season, edible oil imports exceeded 1.6 million tonnes in four months and nearly 1.6 million tonnes in one month.

According to the association's data, India imported 1.614 million tonnes of edible oil in November 2024, 1.617 million tonnes in July 2025, 1.679 million tonnes in August, and 1.659 million tonnes in September 2025, compared to 1.598 million tonnes in June 2025.

In addition, 1.255 million tonnes of edible oil was imported in May 2025, 1.230 million tonnes in December 2024, and 1.078 million tonnes in January 2025. March imports stood at 1.045 million tonnes.

During the marketing season, edible oil imports fell below 1 million tonnes in just two months – February and April. Edible oil imports were 9.63 lakh tonnes in February and 9.46 lakh tonnes in April, while palm oil imports declined sharply.

The above data compiled by the association also includes edible oil imports from Nepal. Refined edible oil was mainly imported from Nepal, and its quantity during the entire marketing season was slightly over 7.46 lakh tonnes.
