Peas Rally on Limited Arrivals and Improved Demand
Kanpur. Pea prices trended upwards during the current week due to subdued selling pressure and improved demand. Arrivals in producing markets remained limited, providing strong support to the market from the supply side. Amid the ongoing rally in gram (chana) prices, pulse mills increased their procurement of peas; this strengthened buying activity and led to a rise in prices. Traders anticipate that if arrivals in producing markets remain restricted and demand from pulse mills persists, pea prices could continue to strengthen in the near term. Due to reduced selling by importers and improved buying interest, prices of imported peas rose by ₹75–₹100 per quintal during the week; by the weekend, prices at Mundra Port stood at ₹4,125 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹4,025 per quintal for Russian peas. Meanwhile, at Hazira Port, prices reached ₹4,150 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹4,050 per quintal for Russian peas.
Domestic markets also witnessed an improvement in demand this week. Driven by increased buying, the price of Kanpur peas rose by ₹75 per quintal to reach ₹4,350 per quintal. Similarly, prices for Lalitpur peas increased by ₹100, reaching a range of ₹3,950–₹4,500 per quintal. Due to lower selling pressure and higher buying, prices in Orai and Mahoba markets rose by ₹50 per quintal; Orai prices settled at ₹3,800–₹4,000 per quintal, while Mahoba prices reached ₹4,000–₹4,600 per quintal. Likewise, Rath peas saw a rise of ₹100 per quintal, bringing prices to the ₹4,000–₹4,250 per quintal range. Supported by a broad-based market rally and improved demand, pea prices in Madhya Pradesh's *mandis* (wholesale markets) rose by ₹50 per quintal; rates reached ₹3,900–₹4,400 per quintal in Bina and ₹3,800–₹4,300 per quintal in Damoh.
Canada
According to the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture's July report, the area under pea cultivation for the 2026–27 season has declined by approximately 14 percent to 1.23 million hectares. Based on average yields, production is estimated at around 3.15 million tonnes. Due to high carry-over stocks, total availability is projected at approximately 4.16 million tonnes, while exports are estimated at 2.70 million tonnes. India, China, and Bangladesh are likely to remain key buyers. Ending stocks for the season are projected to drop to 0.81 million tonnes. Meanwhile, in the US, the area sown with peas has also decreased to 1.05 million acres (0.42 million hectares), indicating a likely decline in production there as well.
