Mixed trend in Masoor; limited availability makes a sharp price drop unlikely
Mumbai: The domestic Masoor market witnessed a mixed price trend during the current week. Buying by dal mills remains limited due to sluggish offtake of Masoor dal. Millers are purchasing only according to their immediate requirements at current price levels, keeping market gains in check for now. Trade sources anticipate an improvement in Masoor demand as pulse consumption rises in the coming months. If demand from dal mills increases as expected and market arrivals remain limited, Masoor prices could strengthen in the near term. Currently, the likelihood of a significant price drop appears low due to constrained availability. Meanwhile, prices of imported Masoor remained largely unchanged this week, as selling pressure from importers eased and buying activity remained sluggish. By the weekend, prices stood steady at ₹5,700–5,800 per quintal for Mundra-origin Canadian Masoor, ₹5,800 for Hazira-origin, ₹6,000 for containerized Canadian Masoor, and ₹6,000–6,050 for Australian Masoor. Future market direction will depend on demand from dal mills, domestic market arrivals, and selling activity by importers.
Canada
Masoor trading in Western Canada remains steady. Prices for red lentils are hovering around 22 cents per pound, while 'Number 2' quality large green lentils are at 23 cents per pound. The area sown with Masoor in Canada has decreased by approximately 14 percent this year, suggesting a likely decline in production. However, total availability is expected to remain adequate due to substantial carry-over stocks. Arrivals of the new crop are likely to commence within the next 2–3 weeks. Meanwhile, the prospect of higher production in Australia could intensify competition in the global market.
Delhi
Due to subdued buying by dal millers, prices of Masoor (red lentil) in Delhi softened by ₹50 per quintal during the week. By the weekend, rates stood at ₹7,500 (Chhoti Kota), ₹8,350 (Bundi), ₹8,800 (Uttar Pradesh variety), and ₹6,850 (Desi Badi) per quintal.
Madhya Pradesh
Increased buying led to a rise of ₹100 per quintal in Masoor prices in Madhya Pradesh this week. Weekend rates were: Ashoknagar ₹5,800–₹6,350, Bina ₹6,100–₹6,500, Ganjbasoda ₹6,000–₹6,400, Sagar ₹6,000–₹6,400, Damoh ₹6,100–₹6,550, Indore ₹6,200, Kareli ₹5,700–₹6,565, and Katni ₹6,700 per quintal.
Uttar Pradesh
With both buying and selling remaining sluggish, there was no fluctuation in Masoor prices in Uttar Pradesh during the week. Weekend rates stood at: Bareilly (Chhoti) ₹10,300 and (Moti) ₹6,875–₹6,900; Lalitpur (Moti) ₹6,300–₹6,400 and (Chhoti) ₹9,500–₹9,600; and Orai ₹6,000–₹6,300 per quintal.
Others
Due to sluggish demand, there was no change in Masoor prices in Bihar this week; weekend rates were Barh ₹7,200, Khusrupur ₹7,000, and Mokama ₹7,200 per quintal. Meanwhile, Raipur saw a rise of ₹50 per quintal in Masoor prices, reaching ₹6,500 per quintal by the weekend.
Masoor Dal
Due to sluggish demand, no significant fluctuation in Masoor Dal prices was recorded during the week; by the weekend, prices stood at ₹7,500–7,600 in Indore, ₹7,900–8,100 in Barh, ₹7,800–8,000 in Khusrupur, ₹7,900–8,100 in Mokama, ₹9,000 in Chandausi, and ₹7,700 per quintal in Hyderabad.
