Mustard prices soften due to increased arrival of new crop


Key Highlights (8–14 March, 2025)

  1. Price Softening Due to New Crop Arrival

    • Production Estimate:
      • 2024-25 Season: 128.70 lakh tons (↓3.90 lakh tons from last year’s 132.60 lakh tons).
    • Increased arrival of new crop and old stock exerting downward pressure on prices.
  2. State-wise Price Movement

    • Delhi:
      • 42% Condition Mustard: ↓ ₹100 to ₹6000 per quintal
    • Jaipur: ↓ ₹50 to ₹6100 per quintal
    • Gujarat (Deesa, Dhanera): ↓ ₹200 per quintal
    • Haryana: ↓ ₹50–₹100 per quintal
    • Madhya Pradesh (Gwalior): ↓ ₹200 to ₹5500/5600 per quintal
    • Rajasthan: ↓ ₹100–₹400 per quintal
      • Bikaner: ↓ ₹400 to ₹5100/5400 per quintal
    • Uttar Pradesh:
      • Hapur: ↓ ₹50
      • Agra: ↓ ₹100
  3. Minimum Support Price (MSP) vs. Market Price

    • MSP: ₹5950 per quintal
    • Current market price for normal-quality mustard is much below MSP.
    • Despite lower prices, arrivals in markets remain strong.
  4. Increase in Mustard Arrivals

    • 8 March: 7.25 lakh bags
    • 10 March: 11 lakh bags
    • 11 March: 11.50 lakh bags
    • 12 March: 12.25 lakh bags
    • Just before Holi: 4 lakh bags
    • High arrivals are leading to increased mustard crushing, ensuring steady oil supply.
  5. Mustard Oil Prices Decline

    • Delhi (Expeller): ↓ ₹25 to ₹1290 per 10 kg
    • Bharatpur: ↓ ₹60 to ₹1260 per 10 kg
  6. Mustard Cake (DOC) Prices Show Mixed Trend

    • Due to strong demand, DOC prices increased by ₹200–₹800 per tonne.

Market Outlook

  • Mustard prices may remain under pressure in the short term due to strong arrivals.
  • If farmers begin to hold back stock and demand picks up, a gradual price recovery is possible.
  • Mustard oil prices are expected to stay stable with mild fluctuations based on demand.
