Torrential Rains Wreak Havoc in Gujarat

Ahmedabad. While the monsoon remained weak in Gujarat during June, it became intensely active in July. Several districts in South Gujarat experienced such heavy rainfall that many areas became inundated.

The districts of Tapi, Navsari, Surat, and Valsad have been severely affected by floods and rains. Subsequently, the monsoon moved northward, passing through Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad to reach Rajkot. The rainfall was observed to be particularly intense and concentrated.

By July 27, Kharif crops had been sown across 59.26 lakh hectares in Gujarat; however, this acreage fell short of the previous year's figure of 65.56 lakh hectares by 6.30 lakh hectares. It is noteworthy that Gujarat is the country's leading producer of cotton, groundnut, and castor.

Additionally, the state produces significant quantities of maize, moong (green gram), tur (pigeon pea), urad (black gram), bajra (pearl millet), soybean, and guar (cluster bean). Heavy rains and severe flooding have caused waterlogging in fields across certain regions of Gujarat, posing a threat to Kharif crops. Further heavy rainfall is forecast for the area, which could prove disastrous.
