Steady Expansion of Almond Orchards in Australia

Canberra. Almond orchards in Australia are undergoing steady annual expansion. Although unseasonal rains during the harvest period have created uncertainty regarding almond yield and quality, export continuity remains intact.

According to the Almond Board of Australia's seasonal report, approximately one million new almond trees were planted across the country in 2025. Currently, the total area of ​​almond orchards in Australia has reached 70,968 hectares, with 62,203 hectares currently in production. The 'Nonpareil' variety accounts for the largest share, covering 28,311 hectares. This is followed by the 'Carmel' variety at 14,699 hectares and the 'Monterey' variety at 6,879 hectares. Additionally, self-fertile almond varieties have been planted across 5,324 hectares.

In 2025, Australia recorded an impressive total almond production of 155,697 tonnes, marking the second-highest level on record. While initial estimates for the current year projected exports of 166,892 tonnes, unseasonal rains and adverse wind conditions subsequently impacted yield and quality; consequently, it will be interesting to observe the final production and export performance. Notably, a carry-over stock of 11,085 tonnes of almonds remains available in Australia.

Although exports got off to a slow start in the 2026-27 marketing season, the pace subsequently picked up. In the third month of the current season, 13,089 tonnes of almonds were exported, a figure 14 percent lower than the previous year.
