Telangana Government Urges Centre to Procure Entire Stock of Pulses and Maize

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has urged the Centre to ensure the procurement of the entire marketable surplus of Kharif-season pulses, maize, and sorghum (jowar) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Additionally, a demand has been made for a minimum guaranteed price of ₹25,000 per tonne for oil palm. The state government also seeks Centre-assured procurement of the entire oilseed harvest to provide relief to farmers.

Telangana's Agriculture Minister stated that the Central government should raise the procurement limit for pulse and oilseed crops from 25 percent to 100 percent. He argued that increasing procurement volumes would enable farmers to secure remunerative prices for these crops, thereby boosting their enthusiasm for increasing production and alleviating concerns about having to sell their produce at distressingly low rates.

A statement issued by the Telangana Agriculture Department noted that the Union Agriculture Minister has assured that the Central government would procure pulses and oilseeds and that the issue regarding the procurement of sorghum and maize would be taken up with the concerned minister. It is worth noting that agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture procure only pulses, oilseeds, and copra from farmers at MSP, whereas the procurement of paddy, wheat, and coarse grains is handled by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), an agency under the Ministry of Food.

The Telangana Agriculture Minister has also urged the Centre to consider fixing a minimum guaranteed price of ₹25,000 per tonne for Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) of oil palm to make the crop more attractive to farmers. Furthermore, a demand has been made to establish a regional oil palm research centre in Telangana to provide a special boost to its production.
