Opportunity for India to Export Wheat Worth Up to $1.50 Billion

New Delhi: Driven by record production, massive government stocks, competitive pricing, and a liberal export policy, India is poised for a strong opportunity to boost wheat shipments. This could enable the country to re-establish itself as a reliable supplier in the global market.

ASSOCHAM, a leading industry body, states that with a well-planned and seriously implemented strategy, India could secure opportunities to export wheat worth over $1.50 billion. Notably, the government has recently deregulated the export of wheat and wheat products.

An ASSOCHAM study report indicates that conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for India to expand its wheat exports. Global wheat prices are rising due to specific factors; adverse weather has impacted production in certain countries, while disruptions have hindered trade flows. Wheat export shipments from Russia and Ukraine have slowed down significantly.

Record-breaking heatwaves across European Union nations—particularly in France, Germany, and Spain—have partially damaged wheat crops this year. Wheat production prospects remain uncertain in Australia and Argentina, while the outlook in the US and Canada is also lackluster.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has projected that global wheat production will decline from a record 844 million tonnes in the 2025-26 season to 819 million tonnes in the 2026-27 season, even as demand is expected to remain robust. In India, wheat production was estimated at a record 121 million tonnes for the 2025-26 season, with domestic consumption projected at 111 million tonnes.
