Maputo. During the first nine months of the current year—from January to September 2026—Mozambique exported sesame seeds to the European Union and Japan in 64 separate shipments; notably, not a single shipment was rejected.
It is worth noting that both these markets place a high premium on product quality, and any goods found to be adulterated, counterfeit, or of poor quality are promptly rejected.
Each of these 64 shipments consisted of 100 tonnes of sesame seeds, amounting to a total volume of 6,400 tonnes. Of this, 1,400 tonnes were shipped to the European Union, while the remaining 5,000 tonnes were exported to Japan.
According to official data, Mozambique’s total sesame seed exports during this nine-month period reached 48,915 tonnes—a figure that includes the 6,400 tonnes sent to the European Union and Japan. Crucially, none of these shipments were rejected or returned by any of the importing nations.
This marks the first time in the past five years that sesame seeds from Mozambique have been accepted universally, a significant improvement given that, in previous years, shipments were frequently rejected by one country or another.
