Jaipur. With wholesale market prices trading significantly above the government's Minimum Support Price (MSP), mustard-producing farmers are realizing excellent returns this year; consequently, they are demonstrating considerable interest and proactivity in selling their stocks. Despite the elevated prices, the enthusiasm among traders and oil millers for purchasing mustard remains undiminished.
Data compiled by Anil Chatar, Managing Director of Marudhar Trading Agency—a renowned and trusted establishment located in the Chandpole grain market of Jaipur (Rajasthan)—reveals that during the first quarter of the current Rabi marketing season (i.e., March–May 2026), the nation witnessed a massive total inflow of 5.5 million tonnes of mustard.
This figure comprises 5.45 million tonnes received in wholesale markets nationwide and 50,000 tonnes procured at government purchasing centers. In private markets, mustard arrivals reached 1.9 million tonnes in March and 2 million tonnes in April; meanwhile, for May, the estimated supply stands at 1.6 million tonnes—consisting of 1.55 million tonnes in wholesale markets and 50,000 tonnes at government purchasing centers.
At the commencement of the season, there was a carry-over stock of 200,000 tonnes of mustard. With a production volume of 11.425 million tonnes in the current season, the total availability reached 11.625 million tonnes. Following the inflow of 5.5 million tonnes from this total, farmers are currently left with a residual stock of 6.125 million tonnes of mustard. Government agencies currently hold an available stock of 50,000 tonnes, as their previous stocks had already been liquidated.
During the quarter, the estimated volume of mustard crushing at the national level stands at 4.4 million tonnes. This figure comprises 1.5 million tonnes crushed in March, 1.6 million tonnes in April, and 1.3 million tonnes in May.
Thus, as of June 1, 2026, the total estimated stock of mustard available in the country is projected to be 74.25 lakh tonnes, comprising 12.50 lakh tonnes held by traders/stockists and millers/processors, 61.25 lakh tonnes held by farmers, and 50,000 tonnes held by government agencies. The stocks held by millers/traders also include carry-over stocks from the previous period.
