Government Wheat Procurement Exceeds Even the Revised Target

New Delhi. Government procurement of wheat for the Central Pool reached 349.92 lakh tonnes as of May 31, 2026. This figure is approximately 4 lakh tonnes higher than the revised procurement target of 346 lakh tonnes; 51.72 lakh tonnes higher than the 298.20 lakh tonnes procured during the corresponding period of the previous season; and 49.57 lakh tonnes higher than the total procurement of 300.35 lakh tonnes during the last Rabi marketing season. Actual wheat procurement has now surpassed the revised target by 1 percent.
According to official statistics, compared to the previous Rabi marketing season, government wheat procurement this time improved from 119.24 lakh tonnes to 121.63 lakh tonnes in Punjab; rose from 70.83 lakh tonnes to 81.21 lakh tonnes in Haryana; and surged from 77.75 lakh tonnes to 104.37 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh.
Similarly, 17.21 lakh tonnes of wheat were procured in Uttar Pradesh against a figure of 10.25 lakh tonnes, and 24.32 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan compared to 19.80 lakh tonnes. Furthermore, 36,000 tonnes of wheat were procured in Bihar, 9,000 tonnes in Uttarakhand, 10,000 tonnes in Chandigarh, 59,000 tonnes in Gujarat, and 4,000 tonnes in Himachal Pradesh.
Government wheat procurement has concluded in Punjab and Haryana, while it remains ongoing in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. In Punjab, wheat procurement was approximately equal to the assigned target, whereas it exceeded the target by 13 percent in Haryana, 4 percent in Madhya Pradesh, and 3 percent in Rajasthan.
In other states, wheat procurement fell short of the target; however, Himachal Pradesh stands as an exception, where 4,000 tonnes of wheat were procured against an assigned target of 3,000 tonnes. The Central Government may need to set a new target for wheat procurement.
