Monsoon May Soon Arrive in the Country

New Delhi: Recently, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated with confidence that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to reach the southern coast of Kerala within the next 2–3 days, as all relevant meteorological conditions have begun to turn favorable. The monsoon is expected to advance rapidly once the retrograde wind flow associated with the Western Disturbance subsides.
However, the IMD has projected that the Southwest Monsoon will remain weak during the current year, with rainfall expected to be only 90 percent of the long-period average. In light of this, the Central Government has constituted Crop Weather Watch and Crisis Management Groups and has directed state governments to formulate contingency plans.
Typically, the monsoon season commences on June 1st. This year, the Meteorological Department had initially forecast that the monsoon would arrive in India on May 26th; however, due to meteorological impediments, it failed to arrive at that time. The arrival date for the monsoon has now been set for June 4th.
Currently, the monsoon is active over Northern Sri Lanka, Lakshadweep, and the Bay of Bengal (just off the coast of Kanyakumari); therefore, its arrival in India should not be significantly delayed.
Monsoon rainfall is considered crucial for *Kharif* crops, which include paddy, cotton, sugarcane, black gram (*Urad*), pigeon pea (*Tur*), green gram (*Moong*), soybean, groundnut, and maize, among others.
