Rain in North India Begins to Threaten Rabi Crops
★ Over the past two to three days, continuous rainfall has been observed across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
★ Due to the preceding spell of high temperatures, farmers had already irrigated their fields. This led to weakened root systems, making crops unable to withstand the weight and impact of continuous rainfall.
★ Reports from regions such as Bharatpur, Mathura, and Jewar, along with parts of Haryana and Punjab, indicate that wheat crops have lodged (fallen) in the fields.
★ A detailed assessment of the damage is expected soon, but it is evident that crop losses could be at least 10–15%. Additionally, the share of URS (Under-Refraction/Below Standard) wheat is likely to increase.
