Tur Market Downturn: Weak Demand Puts Pressure on Prices
Mumbai: A downward trend was observed in the Tur (Pigeon Pea) market during the current week. Due to a lack of sufficient buying support at elevated price levels, the market failed to sustain its strength, and a softening in prices was recorded. Demand for Tur dal (split pigeon peas) has not materialized as expected, resulting in sluggish procurement activity among dal millers. Millers are purchasing only in limited quantities and remain inactive at higher price points, thereby weakening market support. According to I Grain India, Tur prices continue to face persistent pressure due to weak demand and sluggish buying. If demand for the pulse does not improve in the coming days, the downward trend in the market is likely to persist. Driven by increased selling pressure from importers and continued sluggishness in consumer buying, prices for African Tur in the Mumbai market recorded a decline of ₹50 per quintal. Following this decline, prices at the end of the week settled as follows (per quintal): Mozambique White at ₹6,600–₹6,650; Gazri at ₹6,400–₹6,450; Matwara at ₹6,300–₹6,350; Malawi at ₹5,900–₹5,950; and Sudan at ₹8,000. Meanwhile, in the Chennai market, Tur Lemon prices witnessed a decline of ₹200 per quintal, bringing the price down to ₹7,850 per quintal by the end of the week.
Imported Varieties
Amidst continued weak export demand, prices for Burmese Tur recorded a decline of $5 per tonne this week, settling at $875 per tonne by the end of the week.
