Buying Weak at Elevated Prices; Price Volatility Persists
New Delhi: During the current week, the Chana market witnessed a mixed trend, characterized by alternating phases of bullishness and bearishness. Market strength has failed to sustain itself as buyer interest has waned at the prevailing elevated price levels. The decline in buying activity at higher levels has had a direct impact on prices, preventing the market from achieving stability. Meanwhile, the pressure from the arrival of new Chana crops has gradually begun to intensify in the major producing markets (mandis) of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. As the pace of harvesting accelerates, supplies in the mandis are increasing, thereby exerting additional pressure on the market. In light of the rising arrivals, pulse millers and stockists have currently adopted a cautious stance. They are limiting their purchases to small quantities at high prices and are refraining from building large inventories. The market is failing to receive adequate support due to the lack of any significant improvement in demand. As buying activity by pulse millers slowed down, Delhi Chana prices recorded a decline of ₹50 per quintal this week; following this drop, prices at the week's end settled at ₹5,550–₹5,575 per quintal for the Madhya Pradesh line and ₹5,625–₹5,650 per quintal for the Rajasthan line.
Ports
Due to increased selling pressure from importers and continued sluggish demand, imported Chana prices recorded a decline of ₹50 per quintal this week. Following this decline, prices settled at ₹5,150 per quintal for the Mumbai (Tanzania) line, ₹5,400 per quintal for the Nhava Sheva (Australia) line, and ₹5,350 per quintal for the Mundra line.
Rajasthan
Due to increased arrivals at producing markets and weak buying interest from pulse millers, a decline of ₹50 per quintal was recorded in Rajasthan Chana prices this week. Following this decline, prices at the weekend stood at ₹4,500–₹4,950 in Jodhpur, ₹5,425 in Jaipur, ₹5,100–₹5,200 in Bikaner, ₹5,000–₹5,200 in Kishangarh, and ₹4,900–₹5,300 per quintal in Kota.
Maharashtra
Owing to weakening demand from pulse millers, a decline of ₹50–₹100 per quintal was recorded in Maharashtra Chana prices during the current week. With this decline, prices at the weekend settled at ₹5,200–₹5,400 in Solapur, ₹5,200–₹5,400 in Latur, ₹5,500–₹5,525 in Akola, ₹5,475–₹5,500 in Nagpur, and ₹4,700–₹4,900 per quintal in Ahmednagar.
Madhya Pradesh
Driven by improved demand, an increase of ₹50–₹100 per quintal was recorded in Madhya Pradesh Chana prices this week. Following this rise, prices at the weekend reached ₹5,100–₹5,400 in Ashoknagar, ₹5,000–₹5,500 in Ganjbasoda, ₹5,000–₹5,400 in Sagar, ₹5,650–₹5,700 in Katni, and ₹5,450–₹5,650 per quintal in Indore.
Others
Sustained demand led to an improvement of ₹25 per quintal in Kanpur Chana prices during the current week, bringing the prices to ₹5,700–₹5,750 per quintal by the weekend. Similarly, Raipur Chana also witnessed an increase of ₹25 per quintal this week, with prices reaching ₹5,450–₹5,550 per quintal by the weekend.
