Rain Accelerates Paddy Transplantation in Eastern States

Kolkata: The Southwest Monsoon is currently active across the country's eastern and northeastern states; regions including West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam are experiencing either rainfall or heavy cloud cover. This has significantly aided farmers in the cultivation of Kharif crops, particularly paddy.

Like other parts of the country, the monsoon had been weak in the eastern and northeastern states during June, causing delays in sowing Kharif crops in rain-dependent areas. However, since farmers had already completed the necessary preparations for paddy and other Kharif crops, the pace of sowing accelerated once the rains began.

Various districts in Bihar have been receiving good, intermittent rainfall since July 8, and the Meteorological Department has forecast that this wet spell will continue for the next two to three days. Similarly, heavy rainfall is predicted for the areas of West Bengal bordering Bihar and Jharkhand—regions where monsoon rain was urgently needed.

It is worth noting that West Bengal is the country's leading producer of paddy and rice, while states such as Bihar, Assam, and Odisha also produce paddy on a large scale.
