New Delhi. The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Pulses Mission, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in domestic pulse production over the four years from 2025-26 to 2030-31.

This mission aims to increase domestic pulse production to 35 million tonnes by 2030-31, and efforts will be made to achieve this goal with an investment of ₹11,440 crore.

The implementation of this Pulses Mission will benefit approximately 20 million farmers in the country. Under this mission, they will be provided with improved and high-yield pulse seeds, infrastructure will be developed and expanded to minimize post-harvest losses, and pulses, including tur, urad, and lentils, will be procured from farmers at a fixed price (MSP).

To ensure farmers' access to the latest varieties of pulses, 8.8 million seeds will be distributed free of charge. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish 1,000 processing units to reduce post-harvest losses.

The government says it will ensure the purchase of 100% of marketable quantity of tur, urad, and masoor from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the next four years to provide incentives to farmers.

It is noteworthy that India is the world's leading producer and consumer of pulses. However, due to domestic production falling short of demand and consumption, it requires large imports from abroad.

The country's dependence on pulse imports has increased to 15-20 percent. To reduce this, the government has set an ambitious target for pulse production and has initiated vigorous measures to achieve it.

To meet the growing domestic demand and increase farmers' income by reaching peak production, a 6-year 'Mission for Self-Reliance in Pulses' was announced in the Union Budget for FY 2025-26, which has now received Cabinet approval.
