Oilseed Crop Production to Depend on Weather Conditions

New Delhi. The sowing area for Kharif oilseed crops has nearly matched last year's figures, and the sowing process is now largely complete. While good rainfall in some key producing states has resulted in satisfactory—and in places, promising—crop conditions, the outlook remains weak or average in other regions due to less-than-ideal weather and monsoon patterns.

According to data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture, the total area under oilseed crops for the current Kharif season reached 193.90 lakh hectares by September 11—just 17,000 hectares shy of the 194.07 lakh hectares recorded last year. Generally, this marginal decline in acreage is unlikely to significantly impact overall oilseed production; however, any deterioration in weather or rainfall conditions could certainly affect yields. Robust market arrivals of new stocks—including soybean, groundnut, and other oilseeds—are expected to commence next month.

Official figures indicate that compared to the previous year, the area under groundnut cultivation fell from 50.66 lakh hectares to 50.45 lakh hectares, soybean acreage dropped from 123.06 lakh hectares to 122.08 lakh hectares, and the area under castor declined from 9.31 lakh hectares to 8.36 lakh hectares. Conversely, the area under sunflower cultivation rose from 67,000 hectares to 1.29 lakh hectares, and sesame acreage surged from 9.64 lakh hectares to 11.02 lakh hectares. Additionally, some other crops are also cultivated on a smaller scale during the Kharif season.

Oilseed crop conditions are reported to be good in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, whereas the situation remains mixed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. Rainfall has been deficient in the southern states, creating a risk of crop failure in some areas of Telangana, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
