Bhubaneswar. The Central Government has revised the rice procurement figure for Odisha for the 2024-25 marketing season, increasing it from 5 million tonnes to 5.8 million tonnes.

The Union Ministry of Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution confirmed that the paddy procurement estimate (in terms of rice) for the 2024-25 Kharif marketing season has been increased from 4 million tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes and for the Rabi season from 1 million tonnes to 1.1 million tonnes.

Additionally, the Food Ministry has approved the Odisha Government to advance lifting of rice from the Central Pool until March 2026 to meet its internal needs under the Food Security and Supplementary Nutrition Programme. The advance lifting should be completed by November.

Faced with a surplus stock of around 1.2 million tonnes, the Odisha government has been requesting the Centre four times to increase the quota fixed by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for the Kharif marketing season to create free space for safe storage of paddy procured during the next marketing season.

Government procurement of paddy for the 2025-26 Kharif marketing season in Odisha is scheduled to commence from November 1.

During the 2024-25 season, Odisha procured a record 9.264 million tonnes of paddy, equivalent to around 6.3 million tonnes of rice, while the Food Corporation had set a target of lifting only 5 million tonnes of rice for the central pool.
