22-Oct-2025 03:41 PM

Thiruvananthapuram. Under rapidly changing conditions, the low-pressure area that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal on the morning of October 21st is expected to intensify significantly and turn into a depression by this evening (October 22nd).

A previous low-pressure area had formed over the southeast Arabian Sea, but it did not prove as significant or dangerous as expected. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to be more intense.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system formed over the Bay of Bengal could move towards the southern coasts of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and Andhra Pradesh, and intensify into a depression there. Its intensity will increase thereafter, and it could intensify into a storm on October 23rd. In view of this,

the Meteorological Department has issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu on October 21st and 22nd, and in Kerala on October 22nd.

Additionally, coastal Karnataka, southern interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and the Royal Seema region are expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next three to four days starting today.

Most areas of the southern peninsula are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the current week, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Yanam, the Royal Seema region, and Telangana.

The system over the Arabian Sea may have to compete with the system in the Bay of Bengal. Meanwhile, signs of a tropical storm are visible over the Indian Ocean, which is currently active in the northeastern part of the Madagascar region. Its wind flow is southwestward.

Consequently, the system over the Bay of Bengal may take an additional day to fully intensify. This system could merge with the system or develop into a deep depression immediately afterward.

By the morning of October 21, all the above-mentioned areas of South India experienced either rainfall or thundershowers.

The rainfall is continuing there. Heavy rainfall is occurring in many areas of Tamil Nadu. Light rain is likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh during the next seven days.
