News Capsule: Indian Exporters Face Challenges in Bangladesh Wheat Tender
★ Bangladesh has issued a global tender to import 50,000 tonnes of milling wheat, but Indian exporters may find it difficult to compete due to stringent quality requirements and higher prices.
★ The tender requires a minimum test weight of 76 kg/hectolitre and maximum dockage of 1%.
★ Indian wheat generally has a test weight of 72-74 kg/hectolitre and dockage above 2%.
★ Only some wheat from Madhya Pradesh is considered capable of meeting these specifications.
★ India also faces a price disadvantage:
★ Indian wheat is currently priced at around $280 per tonne FOB.
★ After adding freight and other costs, the landed price rises to about $310-315 per tonne.
★ In comparison, new-crop Black Sea wheat is being offered at $233-238 per tonne FOB, making it far more competitive.
★ Although India has recently resumed wheat exports, including shipments to the UAE, and is expected to harvest a record 120.65 million tonnes of wheat, participation in this Bangladesh tender is likely to remain limited.
★ However, with global wheat prices up about 16% this year and weather-related challenges affecting major producing countries, export opportunities for Indian wheat could improve in the coming months.
