Fertilizer Shortage to be Resolved Through Imports and Domestic Production

New Delhi. With the resumption of vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, India is not only receiving regular imports of chemical fertilizers like Urea and DAP but is also sourcing key raw materials required for their manufacture to boost domestic production.

Given the likelihood of a weak monsoon, fertilizer consumption during the current Kharif season is projected to be slightly lower than initially estimated.

It is noteworthy that the domestic demand for fertilizers during the current Kharif season was estimated at 383.90 lakh tonnes. Against this, the country held a stock of 163.65 lakh tonnes as of July 2, representing 43 percent of the total estimated demand. With June having ended, the focus has now shifted to meeting the demand for the July-September period.

The government is confident that this demand can be met through a combination of improved domestic production and regular imports. As of July 2, the available stocks stood at 69.08 lakh tonnes of Urea, 16.64 lakh tonnes of DAP, 8.90 lakh tonnes of MOP, 45.64 lakh tonnes of Complexes, and 23.09 lakh tonnes of Single Super Phosphate.
