New Delhi: The arrival of the new fennel crop has begun in Unjha mandi, a major producing center in Gujarat. However, due to a reduction in the sown area, production is expected to be lower than last year. Currently, the arrival of new fennel in Unjha mandi, Gujarat, is 900-1000 bags. The price of fennel from Abu Road is quoted at Rs. 200-320 per kg, while the price of fennel from Gujarat is Rs. 90-140 per kg. The arrival of old fennel is 2500-3000 bags. According to available information, fennel was sown on 48,945 hectares in Gujarat during the current season, compared to 57,206 hectares last year. Reports also indicate a 20-25 percent decrease in fennel sowing in Rajasthan compared to last year. Last year, the total area under fennel cultivation in Gujarat and Rajasthan was 95,000-98,000 hectares.
Production to Decrease
Due to the reduced sowing area in the producing centers, fennel production in the country is expected to decrease for the second consecutive year. Notably, in 2024, the country witnessed a record fennel production of 38-40 lakh bags (55 kg each), which decreased to 19-20 lakh bags in 2025. Further decline in production is anticipated during the current season.
Market Trends
Experts say that although fennel production in the country will be low, there is no immediate possibility of a price increase in the coming days as the arrival of new stock increases. However, fennel prices have been firm for some time due to improved buying by exporters. It is noteworthy that the export price of fennel was ₹89-91 in November, which increased to ₹95-96 in early January. Currently, the price is being quoted at ₹102-103, but there are no buyers at these prices. Due to this, a decline in prices is possible in the coming days.
Exports Decline
After record fennel exports during 2024-25, the quantity of fennel exports decreased by 65 percent in the first seven months of 2025-26. Meanwhile, revenue declined by 53 percent. According to data released by the Spices Board, 20,850 tonnes of fennel were exported during April-October 2025, generating revenue of ₹263.89 crore. In contrast, exports during April-October 2024 were 59,831 tonnes, with revenue of ₹561.74 crore. Total fennel exports during 2024-25 were 76,586 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹765.44 crore.
