Regina. Lentil prices strengthened in Western Canadian markets last week, but this week, prices are showing limited fluctuations amidst normal trading activity.
The delivered price for red lentils remains stable at 24 cents per pound, and there has been no significant change in the FOB farm price level.
Trading activity in green lentils is showing some signs of increasing, with the FOB price for No. 2 grade large green lentils improving to 25-26 cents per pound, and No. 3 grade material also available at 22 cents per pound.
There are ample stocks of No. 2 grade small green lentils in Canada, and efforts are being made to increase trading activity, which is necessary.
Lentil planting is expected to begin in April, and if stocks do not decrease by then, it could impact planting decisions. Canada also reportedly has good stocks of red lentils.
Lentil export performance has been strong so far, and there is good demand from major importing countries.
According to analysts, imports into Turkey are weak because they are sourcing more from Kazakhstan.
Some contracts for the upcoming new crop of lentils are being finalized in Canada, and prices are starting to emerge.
Australian lentils are also entering the global market in significant quantities, which is putting pressure on prices.
