Global Cashew Production and Trade Expected to Improve

Mumbai: The cashew production outlook in the Southern Hemisphere countries appears quite good this year. In Asia, production is also expected to improve in countries like India, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia.
Cashew exports from Vietnam have increased to new record levels. Meanwhile, imports into the European Union are also reported to be rising. African countries like Tanzania and Mozambique are also expected to have better cashew production.
The cashew season has begun in the Southern Hemisphere, and the crop condition is better than last year. Cashew production in Tanzania is expected to increase from 420,000 tons last year to 500,000 tons this year. Cashew production in Mozambique is also projected to increase by 15 percent.
As far as the Northern Hemisphere is concerned, most of the cashew crop has already been exported and consumed. As a result, the demand for raw cashews (RCN) is increasing rapidly there.
The strong increase in processed cashew exports from Vietnam is driving up the demand for raw cashews in its processing units.
Meanwhile, India is witnessing a strong increase in the demand and consumption of processed cashews. Indian cashew exporters are facing tough competition from Vietnam and African countries in the US market.
Indian cashews are subject to a 50 percent import duty in the US, while the rate is much lower for Vietnam and African countries.
Vietnam is also exporting large quantities of cashews to China, the European Union, and the Middle East. Cashew stocks in the US have been declining for the past two quarters. High tariffs have increased the cost of cashew imports there.
After the elimination of counter-tariffs, US importers may become active again in the global market for cashew purchases, as consumption is expected to increase in the US.
The Free On Board (FOB) offer prices for Indian processed cashews are reported as $6825 per ton for the LWP variety, $6160 for SWP, $8170 for W320, and $7455 per ton for W450.
