Need to Boost Food Grain Production to 450 Million Tons

Shimla. The Director General of the Fertilizer Association of India has stated that, by the year 2047, India will need to increase its food grain production to reach a target of 450 million tons. To achieve this ambitious milestone, efforts must be directed toward maximizing the utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

In the agricultural sector, the judicious application of modern technology and novel methods—along with the timely and appropriate use of fertilizers—is absolutely essential; this is no longer merely an optional measure, but has evolved into a national priority.

According to the Director General, domestic food grain production will need to be raised to 400 million tons by 2030. Furthermore, by 2047—when the nation celebrates the centenary of its independence—the requirement for food grain production is projected to surge to 450 million tons.

Attaining this colossal objective will not be an easy task, as there is limited scope for expanding the land area dedicated to food grain cultivation, nor is it feasible to reduce the acreage currently allocated to other crops.

The country will need to boost the production of various commodities—including pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, and cotton—alongside rice, wheat, and coarse cereals. Meeting the demands of a growing population and global markets will only be possible if there is a proportionate increase in the production of all crops.

Consequently, greater emphasis must be placed on enhancing yield rates rather than merely expanding the sown area; achieving this will necessitate the extensive application of technology.
