Monsoon Remains Active Across Many States

New Delhi. Torrential rains have been lashing nearly two dozen states across the country over the past few days due to the continued activity of the Southwest Monsoon. This has created a serious risk of flooding in several areas. Heavy rainfall continues in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and the hilly states of the Northeast.

Similarly, heavy rains are occurring in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Chandigarh, as well as in parts of Maharashtra. Flooding poses a significant threat in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh; water levels in several rivers have risen, reaching or exceeding the danger mark.

While the continuous monsoon rains have raised water levels in dams and reservoirs and are expected to benefit certain Kharif crops—including paddy—prolonged waterlogging could damage crops such as pulses, oilseeds, and cotton. A concerning situation, however, persists in South India, where a lack of rainfall has heightened anxiety among farmers in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
