41,612 Tonnes of Chickpeas Exported from Australia in July

Brisbane: Interest in purchasing Australian chickpeas has waned significantly among most importing nations, with the notable exception of India. This is evidenced by the fact that total chickpea exports from Australia in July stood at 41,612 tonnes, of which 35,997 tonnes were shipped to India alone. Apart from the UK (England), no other country received shipments reaching the 1,000-tonne mark; exports to Pakistan, for instance, stalled at 970 tonnes.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that total chickpea exports from Australia during the May–July quarter amounted to 125,658 tonnes. This figure comprises shipments of 26,810 tonnes in May, 57,236 tonnes in June, and 41,612 tonnes in July.

During the quarter under review, India alone imported 53,601 tonnes of chickpeas from Australia. India's monthly imports were 4,047 tonnes in May, 13,558 tonnes in June, and 35,997 tonnes in July.

Additionally, during the same quarter, Australia exported 16,544 tonnes to Bangladesh, 6,430 tonnes to Nepal, 42,614 tonnes to Pakistan, and 2,336 tonnes to the UK. Canada imported 1,127 tonnes. Australia primarily exports 'Desi' (brown/small-seeded) chickpeas.
