Minor Price Fluctuations in Peas Due to Limited Trading

Vancouver. Harvesting of the new pea crop is steadily gaining momentum in Canada and the United States—the two leading trading nations of North America—while buyers are making concerted efforts to gauge yield rates and the actual production outlook. Consequently, trading activity remained limited last week, with only minor fluctuations recorded in prices.
Pea harvesting in Canada is lagging significantly behind last year's pace. By last week, harvesting had been completed on 36 percent of the area, whereas 48 percent of the crop had been harvested during the same period last year.
Assuming average yield rates, this 36 percent harvest yielded a stock of approximately 951,000 tonnes for farmers—significantly lower than the 1.64 million tonnes obtained during the corresponding period last year.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the harvested area reached 73 percent, slightly trailing the 78 percent recorded last year. Based on average yields, farmers there secured a stock of 583,000 tonnes, compared to 655,000 tonnes obtained the previous year.
