Chickpea Harvesting Begins in Australia; Recent Rains Benefit the Crop

Brisbane. Preparations for the harvest of winter crops—particularly chickpeas—have begun in Australia. Harvesting of early-sown chickpea crops has already started in Central Queensland. Meanwhile, recent beneficial rainfall in the northern part of New South Wales has significantly aided the chickpea crop, raising the likelihood of improved yields.

Similarly, the production outlook for lentils and faba beans is also improving. Crop conditions have notably strengthened in major producing states like South Australia and Victoria due to consistent, good rainfall.

Regarding pulse exports, buyer demand is currently below normal, and sellers are releasing stocks in measured quantities. Prices for chickpeas and lentils are witnessing minor fluctuations.

The market is awaiting the quarterly report from the government agency ABARES; this report will clarify the production outlook for pulses such as chickpeas, lentils, and faba beans in Australia, enabling producers, millers, traders, and exporters to formulate their strategies. Chickpea prices are reported at $740 per tonne for delivery to packers and $810 per tonne for delivery to the Port of Brisbane.
