Regina. Lentil trading in Western Canada has been sluggish over the past few days, keeping prices largely stable. Lentil sowing in Canada has concluded, and preparations for harvesting the new crop are set to begin next month (August). Although the area under lentil cultivation has decreased slightly—potentially leading to lower production—ample carryover stocks ensure that the supply and availability situation remains comfortable.

Meanwhile, lentil production in Australia is projected to surge to record levels, potentially posing stiff competition and a significant challenge for Canada in the global export market. Production is also expected to be strong in Russia and Kazakhstan, ensuring there will be no global supply crunch.

In Canada, the price for immediate delivery of No. 1 grade small green lentils is 18 cents per pound, while the FOB farm price for No. 2 grade large green lentils stands at 24 cents per pound, amidst limited demand. There is some buying activity for large green lentils from the upcoming crop, keeping contract prices steady at 24 cents per pound.
