Ottawa. Citing a reduction in sown area and an anticipated decline in yield, Canada’s Ministry of Agriculture has projected that domestic lentil production will fall by 26.6 percent—from 3.363 million tonnes last year to 2.467 million tonnes in the current year.
According to the Ministry’s report, the area sown with lentils in Canada has decreased from 1.772 million hectares to 1.579 million hectares, while the area actually harvested has fallen from 1.743 million hectares to 1.556 million hectares.
Furthermore, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the average lentil yield is expected to drop from 1.93 tonnes per hectare to 1.59 tonnes per hectare. The harvesting of the crop is now nearly complete.
During the 2025-26 season, Canada imported approximately 50,000 tonnes of lentils; this figure is projected to rise by 50 percent to 75,000 tonnes in the 2026-27 season.
Taking into account carry-over stocks, domestic production, and imports, the total availability of lentils in Canada is expected to reach 3.825 million tonnes, while exports are projected at 2.4 million tonnes. By the end of the season, a surplus stock of 1.145 million tonnes is expected to remain.
