Lentil Prices Remain Largely Stable Amidst Limited Trading Activity

Regina. Trading activity in Western Canadian lentil markets has been somewhat sluggish, resulting in an environment of significant price stability. The FOB farm price for large green lentils has remained largely steady at 23–24 cents per pound, with delivery timelines currently quoted for August.

Similarly, the price for Grade No. 1 small green lentils has declined to 18–19 cents per pound—a figure also based on FOB farm terms. Supplies of Grade No. 2 quality lentils are extremely scarce, and trading activity for this grade remains minimal. Demand for small green lentils has also weakened considerably, although trading activity sees occasional sporadic improvements.

As for red lentils, their prices are currently trading at a premium compared to large green lentils. Red lentils are currently trading within the price range of 25–26 cents per pound. Typically, the situation is reversed; prices for large green lentils usually command a significant premium over red lentils—a trend that has shifted this season. This scenario could provide a strong incentive for farmers to increase the acreage dedicated to red lentil cultivation.

During the 2025–26 season, Canada witnessed a robust lentil harvest; consequently, despite strong export performance, the country currently holds substantial stockpiles.

Meanwhile, Australia also achieved an exceptional lentil harvest and is now posing a formidable challenge to Canada in the international export market. Sowing operations for lentils are currently underway in both countries.
