Vancouver. The time for harvesting the new lentil crop in Canada is very near, so the business of old stock has started to slow down.
Although the price of red lentil remained relatively strong at the beginning of the current week, a softening environment was seen in the prices of green lentil.
The FOB farm price of red lentil is seen to be 28-29 cents per pound and some buyers are still showing activeness in making advance contracts for the upcoming new crop.
The market of small green lentil is almost calm. The few buyers who are there are ready to give its plant at around 33 cents per pound, whereas the producers are considering it less.
As far as thick (large) green lentil is concerned, the FOB farm price of both its old crops is running at around 37 cents, but the interest of buyers is seen to be very low at this price level.
Small green lentil prices are under pressure due to increase in area under cultivation and higher average yields, which will increase overall production. Demand is also weak and traders are showing limited interest in buying it.
But with the possibility of heavy rains, there is growing concern about the quality of both red and green lentils. There is a risk that the price difference between high quality and low quality lentils may increase. A basic customs duty of 10 per cent is imposed on import of lentils in India.
