01-Aug-2025 06:50 PM

New Delhi. For some time now, Nigella trade is happening in limited quantities but stockists are not selling by reducing the price. Due to which the prices have been quoted strongly at the previous level. During the current month, the prices of Nigella have been moving between 100/200 rupees in the range of low and high. But traders believe that soon the phase of rise in the prices of Nigella will begin. Because on one hand, along with the decrease in the arrival in the markets, the stock with the producers has also decreased. On the other hand, about 7/8 months are left for the new crop to arrive.
Nigella is mainly produced in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. During the current season, the production of Nigella in Gujarat was higher than last year but the production in Madhya Pradesh was less. Overall, the total production of Nigella in the country this year is considered to be 2.25/2.50 lakh bags (each bag is 100 kg). Last year also the production was the same, in the year 2023 the production was 3.5/4 lakh bags.
Total availability low
Although during the current season the production is believed to be equal to last year, but due to less outstanding stock, the total availability will be less. Knowledgeable sources say that during the year 2024, apart from the production of 2.25/2.50 lakh bags, the outstanding stock was 1.25/1.50 lakh bags, whereas during the current season, the outstanding stock at the time of new crop was considered to be 30/40 thousand bags. Sources believe that about 3.50/4 lakh bags of nigella seeds are required per year including export and local consumption, whereas during the current season the total availability will be around 3 lakh bags. Due to which there is no possibility of slowdown in the prices of nigella seeds.
Arrival
Informed sources say that daily arrivals have come down to the minimum level due to about 80/85 percent of the total production going to the markets. Arrival in Neemuch Mandi of Madhya Pradesh has come down to 350/400 bags and the price is being quoted at Rs 185/212 per kg. Whereas in Gondal Mandi of Gujarat, arrival is of 70/80 bags and the price is being quoted at Rs 190/206. It is worth mentioning that during the month of April, the arrival of Kalonji in Gondal Mandi was 2400/2500 bags and the price was being quoted at Rs 160/185.
Slowdown-Rise
Informed sources say that there is no possibility of slowdown in the current prices of Kalonji because during the current season the availability is less than the consumption and along with this the arrival has also decreased. It is expected that in the coming days, demand for Kalonji will gradually increase and the prices will also increase. Traders believe that this year the price of Kalonji should reach Rs 240/250.
